Preposition by Joshua Fields Millburn

According to the video, here’s what a preposition is and how to use it:

  • Definition: A preposition is a word that links a noun or pronoun to some other word in a sentence.
  • Examples:
    • "Jack and Jill went up the hill." (Up connects "went" and "hill.")
    • "Little Jack Horner sat in a corner." (In connects "sat" and "corner.")
  • Common Prepositions: The video lists these common prepositions: about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by, concerning, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, to, toward, under, until, up, upon, with, within, and without.
  • How to Remember: The video suggests remembering that prepositions often indicate the position of something (in, out, under, over, above, etc.).
  • Ending Sentences with Prepositions: While it’s generally better to structure sentences to avoid ending with a preposition, it is acceptable (and often more natural) in conversational contexts. For example, "Whom are you going to the party with?" is more common than "With whom are you going to the party?"
